Immune System Support
Some of the best foods to support the immune system include citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines, clementines, and grapefruit) and other fruits such as papaya, berries, and kiwi, all packed with vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that helps fight infection. Red bell peppers, broccoli, and spinach are also very high in vitamin C and other key vitamins. Nuts and seeds include high amounts of vitamin E, a lesser-recognized, but incredibly powerful antioxidant. Keeping hydrated is important to supporting a healthy immune system, and drinking green tea will amplify those benefits because EGCG in green tea has been shown to enhance immune function. Garlic contains a compound called allicin, which contains immune-supporting properties. Probiotics are not only necessary for a healthy digestive system but also have been shown to contribute to a healthy immune system, so load up on “live active cultures” in sauerkraut, greek yogurt, kimchi, and other fermented foods. Shellfish contain high amounts of zinc, which is necessary for immune cells to function properly — but be careful not to over-supplement with zinc as too high levels can actually inhibit immune function. Finally, don’t forget your chicken soup, which is high in B6 which is necessary for healthy blood cell function, and bone broth contains collagen, chondroitin, and other nutrients, all helpful in maintaining a strong immune system.
