Hi, I’m Marybeth.

My goal is for you to be fully equipped with the practical information, capacity, and determination to change your life through improved physical, mental, and emotional health.

We often put ourselves last in our lives and plan to dedicate the time to improve our well-being eventually (i.e., when things are less hectic, when other people’s needs are met, or when there is more time available), but that perfect time will never magically appear. It is up to you to make the changes you want to make in your life. Let’s start now.

I seek to inspire others to appreciate science and nature in connection with their whole well-being. I am on a mission to promote integrative health while translating the evidence from sound research into digestible knowledge and viable tools individuals and communities can use to realize their healthiest selves.

Certified Holistic Nutritionist | Registered Yoga Teacher | Certified Master Herbalist | Public Health Researcher | Epidemiologist | Biostatistician

My Story

For nearly 20 years, I have worked primarily as a public health researcher, specializing in epidemiology and biostatistics. Throughout the past two decades, I was fortunate to have been involved in the scientific analysis of numerous research studies, but most interesting were those investigating:

  • Benefits of yoga and mindfulness

  • Manners through which herbs and various food constituents affect our bodies and minds

  • Importance of connections with communities contributing to feeling whole

  • How environmental changes affect our health and wellbeing

I have traveled the world, witnessed and assisted with numerous humanitarian and environmental projects in India, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Thailand, Cambodia, Panama, Peru, and Ecuador. During this work, I was able to see firsthand how integrative health combined with women's empowerment are the keys to building healthy and thriving communities.

In 2010, about a year after receiving my MPH (Master of Public Health degree) from George Washington University, I was an unfortunate victim of the Great Recession and was unexpectedly laid off from a job I loved dearly. Following four years of my tenure and after 45 years since the organization was established, it simply dissolved. Proof! I didn’t expect it; I took my position (and paycheck) for granted. That experience was truly traumatizing, but it was actually a wake-up call. With few research jobs available, I was in the same boat as tens of thousands of my colleagues. I spent months painstakingly applying to job after job, submitting dozens of applications that I later found out were unlikely to have ever even been read by employers due to the sheer number of submissions. I decided to take a different approach—at least until the economy improved and more jobs became available. I was wasting my time going after jobs I didn’t actually want instead of going after my passions. I went back to school, yet again.

In 2011, over the course of one year, I became a certified holistic nutritionist, master herbalist, public health certified practitioner (CPH), and registered yoga teacher. I also volunteered internationally and worked with indigenous Amazonian and Andean populations and eventually became the U.S. Board of Directors Vice Chair & Co-Director of AyniGlobal, an NGO based in South America. During the same time, I started my own wellness business, became the founder of the Natural Health Festival in Washington, DC, and collaborated on fascinating projects with the Smithsonian Institution, Therapeutic Yoga of Greater Washington, and the George Washington University Center for Integrative Medicine in Washington, DC.

I felt on top of the world. I truly believed I was making a difference.

Then I got sick. Very sick. In the midst of it, I returned to a 9-5 research job, which didn’t help my mental health. I gained 40 lbs in one year, and on my small frame, I was unrecognizable even to close friends. Despite eating an incredibly clean, conscientious diet and engaging in consistent high heart rate exercise, I had no energy, felt depressed, completely stopped menstruating for four years, my hair was thinning, I developed osteoporosis, experienced extremely low blood pressure, had difficulty staying warm, suffered debilitating migraines, and experienced constant abdominal, joint, and muscle pain. The list went on. My symptoms were labeled “idiopathic,” meaning the causes were unknown. Mainstream doctors were stumped. I was even put on diet pills! (which, by the way, did nothing to affect my weight.) Finally, after a number of blood and imaging tests, a team of doctors, some of whom practiced functional medicine, discovered that I have multiple autoimmune diseases (including Celiac disease, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and Secondary Raynaud’s) as well as a benign brain tumor that may have been disrupting the functioning of my pituitary gland. When the body is experiencing an autoimmune response, it is mistakenly attacking normal cells because it cannot tell the difference between its own cells and foreign cells. Most debilitating, my small intestines and thyroid gland were being attacked, which was affecting both the absorption of nutrients—leading to nutrient deficiencies—as well as limiting the production of thyroid hormones, which basically caused every major process in my body to slow down. Thyroid hormones are responsible for controlling how the body uses energy (i.e. metabolism) and therefore, essentially power all bodily systems. No wonder I felt so terrible!

Despite all my knowledge about health up to the point of illness, it took years more of self-study, self-advocacy, and the incorporation of additional healthy lifestyle practices to find solutions and finally feel myself again.

Autoimmune diseases are incurable. They never go away. And because they generally present in clusters, it’s likely my body is struggling with even more autoimmune conditions than I have thus far been formally diagnosed. But that doesn’t mean I cannot live a happy, healthy, and thriving life. I believe I am a powerful testament to that. I still experience my ups and downs and the flare-ups that naturally come with my condition, but I can honestly say that I feel better now than I have felt in over a decade.

In this next chapter of my life, I am assimilating all the knowledge and experiences I have gained and putting them into practice to make fundamental differences in people’s lives. I’d love the opportunity to connect with you and work to develop a personalized plan for fueling your body, nourishing your mindset, and positively changing the trajectory of your life.

My Approach

So how did I get here? A very tailored integration of both modern medicine and natural modalities. My role as a wellness coach is informed by my love for both science and nature. I believe nature is the most effective healer; it has changed my life in some profound ways but coupled with innovation and science, it has opened doors to medical breakthroughs, which I undoubtedly would not be on this Earth without.

While everyone has their own set of health struggles, I have especially deep empathy for those who are combating chronic illness, particularly “invisible” illnesses. If you have been told “you look amazing” when you actually feel like poo, then you know what I am talking about.

I have a passion for digging through the research and evidence to get to the root of what is safe and effective. Everything I recommend either on this site, in my courses, or in private consultations is grounded in scientific research, and I will be forthcoming regarding any gaps in the evidence.

Most people don't have the time, energy, or desire to weed through the never-ending piles of health information. If you are frustrated and overwhelmed with the copious amounts of noise in the health and wellness space, you are not alone. And I am happy to help! Let’s go back to the basics and talk about what works and what does not.

As always, I urge collaborating with your primary medical practitioner when introducing any new diet, exercise, or other major changes to your lifestyle. My role is to support and help guide you in making positive and meaningful changes in your life as to realize the best version of yourself.

Mindfulness

With any meaningful life change, your whole body and mind need to be onboard. Just the simple practice of being aware of your actions and your surroundings can have profound effects on your entire well-being.

Nature + Science

Integrative health is an individualized, client-centered model of promoting optimal health and wellness, combining a whole person approach with evidence-based strategies to reduce disease risk by way of an intentional lifestyle.
